Part 1 – Answer the following questions about either “Wild Geese” or “The Red Wheelbarrow” poems based on your reading of them:
Identify the theme of the poem. How do you know this is the theme?
Define the poetic devices (e.g., rhythm, figurative language, etc.) used in the poem. Offer at least two examples. If needed, review the List of Literary Techniques (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to determine the poetic device.
Analyze how these poetic devices contribute to the development of the poem’s message.
Support your ideas with textual details and analyses and include paraphrased and quoted material from the primary sources (the poems themselves). For help on writing paraphrases and quotations, review the Writing Center’s tutorial Integrating Research (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and the Quoting, Paraphrasing, & Summarizing (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. web page.

How did your hearing the poem recited aloud compare to your silent reading of it?
Did the performance highlight certain words or phrases that were not as apparent in a silent reading?
Did the pace change and, if so, how did it change your understanding of the poem?
Did words have different connotations when spoken aloud, and, if so, what kinds of connotation did you associate with the poem?
Do you think reading poetry aloud is a worthwhile endeavor when analyzing it? Why, or why not?
Your initial post that includes parts one and two should be at least 200 words.

Initial post (by Wednesday):
WRTG 112 is a required course for all students, so that is probably one reason you are taking it. However, we all have individual backgrounds and goals that affect how we approach a learning experience. Read over the course syllabus, and then post your responses to the following questions in two paragraphs:
What prior experiences do you have that inform how you approach this class? This could be, for example, writing experience that you think will either help or hurt you as you work on the academic essays assigned in class.
What are some of your aspirations (educational, professional, or other goals) that you can work toward by taking Introduction to Writing, and how might this course help you on your path toward your goals? Which, if any, of the reasons for taking college courses discussed by Michelle Singletary in “Getting to the Real Point of College” apply to you?
Guided response (by Friday):
Respond to at least one of your peers. In your response, consider how your experience might be similar to and/or different from theirs.

The following podcast has some interesting statistics reported in the first 10 minutes about observational studies done with women in film.

A.) They do not discuss how the data was collected.
B.) The sample size is 100 films.
C.) There was 100% response rate, because they chose the films and these were not respondents to a survey.
D.) Variables measured were women with speaking roles (at least one word) and then they also recorded the race of the women.  They recorded for each film, whether there was a woman with a speaking role and the race of the woman with the speaking role.
E.) No graphs were used because this was an audio recording.
F.) Sources of bias could be in how they chose the films for the study.  What years were the films released? Also, what types of films are they?
G.) I think a bit more information in the description of these statistics could help.  While it is interesting that there were only 4 out of 100 films which had female minority with a speaking role, we would like to know a bit more about the films in order to draw even more conclusions.  Interesting statistics though.

Reread the memo about fair housing. Explain how you serve the council even though their ideas might differ from the public good. Can you argue that serving the council’s decision is serving the public good?
