“Case Study on Mental Health.”
When you are used to hearing music played on only one instrument, what could be more captivating than listening to a full symphony orchestra? This week, it is time for you to be the symphony orchestra, i.e., pull out all of the stops. In other words, this is your chance to dazzle your reader and to dazzle yourself. You have laid the groundwork for your Final Project, and this is the week when you move from a thesis sentence and topic outline to a full first draft. Keep in mind the importance of the introduction, body, and conclusion. Remember the prose models you have been reading and how those writers have used topic sentences, supporting details, structure, and transition to put together cohesive essays.

Read a minimum 3 readings from the full suite of readings associated with your selected case study, including  book/media resource associated with each case study and 2 additional articles of your choice.
Write and submit the full rough draft for a persuasive essay that will become the Final Project for this course based on your case study selection. Remember that you are moving away from a personal reflection on the case study to an academic essay loosely based on the case study. This means you should write the essay in third person and remove all personal pronouns, such as “I.” Be sure to provide attribution, using APA formatting, for any outside sources used. The essay should follow these guidelines: be 5 pages in length, be written in the third person, cite outside source materials, using APA formatting, to support your thesis sentence.

The public health topic to be used for the Public Health Policy Analysis is
Prevention of impaired driving
You must choose one particular state and develop your Policy Analysis on this topic (as described and illustrated in Chapter 14 of the course textbook) for a client of your choice at the state level.
I only have a few final words of advice on the final project:
Use the document in Doc Sharing entitled “FINAL PROJECT: Policy Analysis Outline and Guidance” as a framework for your paper.
Be sure your paper has five sections that correspond to the five essential components of a policy analysis as described in the course resources.  You would be wise to use the names of those components as your five subheadings.  For clear descriptions and examples of how to fully and properly develop each of the five components, Chapter 14 of the Teitelbaum and Wilensky textbook is the essential resource.
Be sure your paper is compliant with APA formatting requirements.  (NOTE: there is no need for your paper to have an Abstract or a Running Head.)
Be concise.  Quantity is not quality; project should be no more than 15 double spaced pages.     Irrelevant material will not earn you credit.  And I will return papers that are not double spaced.
Very carefully review the rubric and be sure you meet all of the requirements outlined there.
Submit your project on time.  There will be no extensions granted (except for appropriately documented emergencies.)

Obesity is not exclusive to adults. Each day, more and more children are finding themselves at risk for overweight and obesity. Childhood obesity often accompanies many of the obesity-related conditions adults affected by obesity often experience, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and more. Recent data shows that up to 80 percent of children affected by obesity will continue to be affected by obesity into adulthood (Lobstein, et all, 2015). Obesity impacts children in a variety of ways. First and foremost, a child’s health is impacted as they have now opened themselves up to a wide variety of health issues – issues that most of us didn’t experience until middle-age. In addition to health implications, there’s also one other area that children face which can be very serious – weight bias and bullying. Kids impacted by obesity often find themselves the target of bullying. This bullying can take place in the classroom, in your neighborhood and even in your own home. It is very important to recognize this type of behavior and address it quickly (Lobstein, et all, 2015). The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), a nonprofit dedicated to educating and advocating for those affected by obesity, provides valuable resources on weight bullying.
Over the last decades, food has become more affordable to larger numbers of people as the price of food has decreased substantially relative to income and the concept of ‘food’ has changed from a means of nourishment to a marker of lifestyle and a source of pleasure. Clearly, increases in physical activity are not likely to offset an energy rich, poor nutritive diet. It takes between 1–2 hours of extremely vigorous activity to counteract a single large-sized (i.e., >=785 kcal) children’s meal at a fast food restaurant (Lobstein, et all, 2015). Frequent consumption of such a diet can hardly be counteracted by the average child or adult.
It has been hypothesized that a steady decline in physical activity among all age groups has heavily contributed to rising rates of obesity all around the world. Physical activity strongly influenced weight gain in a study of monozygotic twins (Rivera, et all, 2014). Numerous studies have shown that sedentary behaviors like watching television and playing computer games are associated with increased prevalence of obesity. Furthermore, parents report that they prefer having their children watch television at home rather than play outside unattended because parents are then able to complete their chores while keeping an eye on their children (Rivera, et all, 2014). In addition, increased proportions of children who are being driven to school and low participation rates in sports and physical education, particularly among adolescent girls, are also associated with increased obesity prevalence.
Almost all public health researchers and clinicians agree that prevention could be the key strategy for controlling the current epidemic of obesity. Prevention may include primary prevention of overweight or obesity itself, secondary prevention or avoidance of weight regains following weight loss, and prevention of further weight increases in obese individuals unable to lose weight (Rivera, et all, 2014). Until now, most approaches have focused on changing the behavior of individuals on diet and exercise and it seems that these strategies have had little impact on the growing increase of the obesity epidemic.

Topic 2: Disaster Management
Contact your local public health department to learn about its role in a local disaster, including the role of the nurses who work there.
I called the ……… county health department and spoke with a Mr. ………… He explained to me that he has a list of local nurses that he sends out an email to in order to ask for assistance when there is a need. Currently he is working out at the panhandle and stated that he does have a few volunteers from here who are helping to wrap things up at some of the shelters from the last hurricane. It’s nice that all the countries that have help available come in and help when there is a need. He said that sometimes they need nurses to help with flu shots and such and so he sends out an email and if you are available you just show up. He asked me if I knew anything about the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). I had only just read about it in our material this week. As you guys may already know the MRC is a government organization comprised of a large network of volunteers that come together to improve the welfare and safety of a community (HHS, 2016). Mr. ………asked if I was interested in being a part of it.
Would you be a good candidate to serve on a disaster team?
I do believe that I have something to offer the community, we all do. According to the information that Mr. …….. gave me, I have the opportunity to decline when I am needed if I have other obligations. So of course my job and my family come 1st. I did sign up to be part of the e-mailing group and Mr. ……. will be forwarding my information to another colleague in order to set up membership to the MRC.
Would your current employer be flexible in allowing you to participate in a disaster situation?
I am already part of the disaster team for work, so they would take priority. If I were PRN, I am sure they would be accommodating, but I am a full time staff member, and since being part of the MRC is voluntary, they would not be a priority for me at this time.
What is your personal preparedness to face a disaster?
We have a hurricane/disaster box prepared that has everything needed to help sustain us for 1 week. I have lived in FL for so long that I grew up with a family plan and so I carry that with me now that I have my own family. I have only ever evacuated once and having our preparedness box made that process a lot less stressful.

Create a power point with the intended audience to be a community health department.

Focus on a real or fictional disaster that has or could affect your area. Your area is CALIFORNIA- FIRE

Discuss the role of the Community Health Nurse in each stage of disaster. You should include a few slides on each stage of disaster: preparedness, response, recovery with specific activities and resources that the public health nurse would use in each stage.

Identify other agencies that might be involved.

The assignment should be submitted in Power Point format, with at least 10 content slides (in addition to a title slide and reference slide) and include at least two scholarly sources other than provided materials.
FOLLOW THIS OUTLINE-
Do not write a paper in the PPT – clean, organized and easy to read bullets/graphs/diagrams should be used to get the message across- NO full sentences or paragraphs are to be used in a power point.
Titles on each slide are to be in all capital letters, remaining information such as text info and references are NEVER in all capital letters in a power point.
Citations FOR NON QUOTES are on EACH slide posted in the lower right corner as (author, year).  If you use a QUOTE– then use the citation within the sentence/message and don’t forget the author/year/ p. or para. Has to be cited – but using quotes and full sentences is completely avoided if at all possible for class PPTs.   Citations are to be in parentheses.   I do NOT want you to complete “speaker notes” in your power points!
Enticing background color is welcomed as well as minimal transitions and pictures to add to the message.  Usually 3-4 pictures or diagrams are used in a power point.  (You do not need to cite sources of pictures or graphics in your power point unless they are copyrighted).
Title slide with title, your name, the date, and school listed
Objectives slide follows the title slide and tells the reader what you will cover. (Just like the introductory paragraph in a paper).
Every slide has a heading in ALL CAPITAL letters- of no more than 3-4 words- no acronyms (such as RN, MD, ICU, etc.) are permitted in headings, all numbers and acronyms have to be spelled out in headings or titles or as the first word of any sentence.
No more than 7-8 bullets or points on a slide
Reference slide compiling ALL references as the last slide in APA format; bulleted or “hanging”
Be sure that the font is large enough to read or you may need to make it larger- sometimes 15-20 are good for references.
There should be several pictures, graphs, or diagrams in each power point. If they are copyrighted material, they must be cited and referenced.
NEVER use all capital letters in text of slides, references, or citations in a power point. Only all capitals are used in titles of slides.
